"If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well. Damn well."
Kaoru lives by this mantra. In a word, the girl is intense. She is an overachiever in everything from her schoolwork to her social status and all that is in between.
Because of her successes, and the fact that she's friendly and approachable (most of the time), she's wildly popular. Her peers love her, her teachers adore her, her juniors look up to her. At the same time, her... strong personality tends to put a lot of people off, which is something Kaoru is always struggling against. At times, she thinks of her popularity battles as games, but at the end of the day, they're the most important thing for her.
While she typically seems confident and demure, she does have a temper, and is definitely a sore loser. Although she isn't above a little manipulation, Kaoru generally wants to and tries to do what is right. That's not to say her view of what's right isn't sometimes a bit warped. As with everyone else, she's very assertive around boys, in spite of the fact her experience with romance is nigh zilch. She holds a deep contempt for delinquents, and doesn't want to get involved with anyone on that side of the rulebook after seeing what happened to her dear sister...
Like any girl this concerned with her appearances, Kaoru is deeply insecure. She doesn't think she's pretty, or smart, or even that good of a person. Additionally, she is terrified of people discovering how truly fake she is. She doesn't really care all that much about her grades or being a good athlete or being popular, but she has a desperate need for attention and through those, she fulfills it. One would find that when she's not working so hard to keep up the facade, that she's boyish, frank, easy-going, and the type that just wants everyone else to be happy. But if someone were to see that side of her, she'd die of embarrassment and shame!
All this adds up to the fact that Kaoru hasn't felt secure enough to have a "real friend" in years. Her greatest wish is to become comfortable to make that real friend -- someone she can trust, and someone she can be herself around... even if that means that she's far from the best. Until then, she strives to take care of herself, even if that fierce independence and constantly being on her guard have been wearing her down...family & history

For the most part, Kaoru's history has been pretty unremarkable... which, in itself, is a problem.
She was raised as the second daughter of a hardworking, well-off couple. She wasn't particularly pretty, or smart, or even enthusiastic about anything but she loved her life, her parents, and her elder sister Mika very much. She looked up to her sister a lot; the girl was gorgeous, and intelligent and everything she wasn't... her parent's pride and joy. But Kaoru couldn't be mad at the girl for taking all the attention, as Mika was a loving sister and doted on the young girl.
Things went along like that until Kaoru was in fifth grade, and her Mika was a first-year in high school... and met him.
He was someone her parents considered a "no-good" hooligan, and Mika suddenly started to change. She stopped going to classes and even stopped coming home -- spending her days with him doing, well, "only God knows what". While her parents were concerned, over time, they also became bitter and ashamed, all but disowning the girl. It's been years since the household has had any contact with Mika, she's become something like a taboo topic of conversation for the family.
Her sister's fall from grace left quite the impression on Kaoru. It was symbolic: stop doing great things, and people will stop loving you. She knew that she was rather mediocre in everything, which put her at risk. While things obviously weren't that simple, it was the reasoning of a ten-year old that would hold true well into her teens. Kaoru pushed herself into her schoolwork, her appearances, and the club activity she'd eventually choose: rhythmic gymnastics. Her parents, of course, were proud of their daughter's achievements. Kaoru loved the attention and praise she'd get, so the vicious cycle turned round and round.
Nowadays, her family life is rather normal for being in that area and socioeconomic status. Her father is busy with work at his company, which is in the nearest big city, most of the time, though he does try to take the time to support his family other ways when he can. Her mother bought and helps manage a local floral shop, but has enough time to keep house and maintain a somewhat close relationship with her daughter. But one who observes the family with any scrutiny can see the gaping hole left by Mika's absence, and how it's affected everyone, especially Kaoru. To fill the void left by her sister and once-best friend, Kaoru spends nearly all her free time studying, practice, and researching the latest fashions and trends in her attempt to keep up appearances... that, to this day, remains a closely guarded secret.
While her grades, exam scores, and parents' standing qualified her to attend the prestigious Washizu academy, the girl's rhythmic gymnastics team there was wonderfully sub-par... just the opposite of another local school, Karasumori High. Frustrated with the conditions of her team and the fact the administration pours all its resources into the nationally-renowned boys, she does the best she can to motivate her own team to perform, and earn the respect (and adoration) of those around her.other
