At first glance, Kiyama is every bit the "lone wolf" archetype; he values his solitude, prefers to keep to his own affairs and maintains a cool and collected persona. If one chips away at the extremely thick shell that he's built up, they would find a complicated individual who's not nearly as tough as he seems to be.
Still, one of the most prominent elements of his personality, if not the most prominent, is his requirement for emotional distance. This is likely a result of personal insecurities and the fear hurting of losing those close to him. All that results in Kiyama's stoic, aloof and sometimes stand-offish behavior.
He might be known as an excellent fighter, but he truly hates conflict and will do all in his power to avoid it. It takes a lot to get under his skin, but he won't hesitate to confront someone he feels offends or threatens someone he cares about. It also takes a lot of time to develop any kind of relationship with Kiyama. Over the past few years, he's become complacent with being an "acquaintance" of a select few, namely Azuma Wataru and his gang. He's generally pleasant (if not a bit prickly at times), and very respectful.
Contrary to his tough exterior, Kiyama is extremely generous and nurturing. Few things give him more pleasure than being able to help out another person. This precludes his need to keep emotional distance from others, and often makes his behavior seem inconsistent. When he does become involved with another, those ties run very deep. He is literally prepared to die for those he cares about, although he'd prefer to do it without telling that person.
Though he can have an emotional streak, Kiyama is generally governed by rationality. He can be very calculating, and always considers the consequences of his actions. Though he doesn't talk much, everything he says is sincere and something he considers important. He is also very industrious, though in proper fashion, he really hates for people to see that he cares about something so much he works that hard for it.
Kiyama has a few interesting quirks. For instance, he has a dry and sardonic sense of humor. He's very sensitive about things that might seem trivial to others, like being teased about his sometimes obscure interests and strange points of view. It's a rare occurrence, but breeching his comfort zone will quickly get him flustered to almost comically excessive proportions.family & history

Kiyama Ryuichiro was the product of a relationship between a traditional, middle-aged salaryman and a flighty, young college student that ended up in one of those shotgun marriages. The atmosphere in the Kiyama household was always somewhat... off. Despite his family's strange dynamics and general coldness, he started out more or less a normal kid, if not a bit more sensitive and introverted than most boys his age. During his first years of school he had the normal acquaintances and playmates, but mostly kept to himself. Kiyama was an average enough student, though the type that was probably really bright but really didn't care all too much for academics, opting to bury himself in hobbies like video games, books, and kickboxing lessons his dad enrolled him in to "keep him out of trouble".
It turned out that Kiyama's parents were people who believed in things like "love" and "family" as ideals, but not in practice. Thus, things for the Kiyama boy started to change when his parents split up. His father moved out and closer to his job in the city, opting to do the "weekend thing" with his son. His mother tried the best she raise a son on her own, though she never quite got over getting pregnant and having to drop out of college. A would-be academic, she dabbled in numerous projects from psychology papers on family dynamics to children's books; ironically, those took most of her attention from her own.
In the end, the divorce was quick and civil, but seeing his household change so completely took its toll on Kiyama. He became more withdrawn and often crossed his peers because of his flippant attitude. His peaceful demeanor competed with his pent-up aggressions for dominance, and it wasn't long before he began to get in fights with them. Kiyama happened to be a very good fighter, which caught the attention of many of the local troublemakers; particularly one named Wataru Azuma.
But in middle school, he made his first "real friend," another unpopular boy named Kono Takashi. Both were socially awkward and had troubles making friends in the past, and the two soon found themselves sticking together like glue. Unfortunately, a terrible chain of events led to Takashi being killed by gang members, and Kiyama spending a time in protective custody. Though he was legally found innocent, he was shunned by his peers and branded a delinquent by society. While she defended her son from the system and outside parties, his already embittered mother more or less estranged herself from him, and the two essentially live separate lives under the same roof... when she's even in town.
Moreover, Kiyama held himself responsible for his friend's death, stuck in one grieving stage or another. The combination of his guilt, depression, and the way he was treated spurred him to embrace the label of "yankee" and he became a figure in the local gang scene. The incident caused him to isolate himself even more than before; he was terrified of losing another person he'd come to care for. Yet a recent stint resulted in his joining his school's rhythmic gymnastics team. As odd as it might seem, it may be the best chance he has for a positive turn in his life...other
